Crabbin’ it up in Hampton

J&A’s Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon + 5K race went down in the City of Hampton where runners in the half-marathon enjoyed a scenic course through historic downtown, along the Chesapeake Bay and the Hampton Roads Harbor. The energy was off-the-charts high with volunteers posted up at every corner offering up cheers of support, water, candy and smiles from ear to ear.

What could be better than that? Well…fancy medals for all finishers, and a Craft Brew Fest with live music, food (Kickin’ Corn and Crab Chowder compliments of Baker’s Crust.) and ice cold brews!

For the 13.1 mile half marathon, Jpixx intern Will Clarke captured footage on bike and pedaled nearly the entire course – while Jon and Dominique blanketed downtown Hampton with delicious race coverage. Meanwhile, Nate the Snake stationed himself near mile-marker 7 at the Harbor and Karla took the start and finish line. Everyone enjoyed the party afterwards 🙂

Jpixx even brought out the movi (we need a name for this cool guy) to capture some cool shots during and after the race. Most importantly, we got a chance to interview the runners, their families and locals enjoying the festivities too. Check out these exclusive BTS pics of our day at the Crawlin’ Crab Marathon and be sure to watch the fabulous day-of video highlights video at the bottom of the page!

Jpixx Meets the Chef

Jpixx shot a “Meet the Chef” series earlier this year for Visit Virginia Beach where we interviewed the chef’s of local establishments about what makes their restaurant one of a kind. We learned that all the restaurants rely heavily on local resources like farms within 100 miles and the Chesapeake Bay. It is those very resources that inspire the dishes that represent Virginia Beach flavor too!

First stop…

Commune

Located in the Creative District in Virginia Beach, Commune provides fresh and healthy food locally sourced from trusted farmers in the area. Not only do they outsource produce-  they have their own herb-garden in the back. The gang tasted fresh herbs straight from the earth and some of the tasty dishes you will see below. How bout that for job perks?!

WARNING: This post may cause extreme bouts of hunger. Proceed with caution!

PLEASURE HOUSE OYSTERS

This shoot for Virginia Tourism was definitely interesting. Nothing like getting on a boat to shoot and having the opportunity to eat fresh raw oysters straight from the ocean. We interviewed Chris Ludford, owner of Pleasure House Oysters about his business and created several fun segments, including this one called “The 7 Steps to Eating an Oyster.”

These Virginia Tourism shoots alongside BCF has taken Jpixx on one heck of a rollercoaster ride. Stay tuned for more to come – and keep up with all of Virginia Beach’s best eateries and recipes on the city’s instagram account.

ROC’n the Ride for a Good Cause

Roc Solid Foundation strives to give the gift of play back to children battling pediatric cancer. Children diagnosed with cancer oftentimes lose the simple joys that come along with childhood due to their condition. (Skip to the bottom to go straight to the video)

Thanks to Rubin Communications, the Jpixx crew had the opportunity to put together a video bringing awareness to pediatric cancer through a new event called Roc the Ride, a two-day cycling trip from Richmond to Norfolk. The six-member cycling team will meet with families and staff at the major children’s hospitals in each city.

Check out our BTS photos from our day with the Roc the Ride crew!

Ready to Red, White and Brew

Craft brewers and winemakers (waaaay too many to name) gathered at Drink the District’s Red White & Brew Festival doling out samples of more than 100 types of beer and wine. Not only did the crowd enjoy the beer and wine samples but got a taste of some of the best food trucks in Hampton Roads!

Jpixx was of course in the house catching all the food, drinks, lawn games and live music from Cheap Thrills and DJ Julian Rivera. It was an event you didn’t want to miss – but don’t worry if you did – we got you covered with plenty of BTS pics to hold you over until next year. Check it out!

Tidewater Arts Outreach Helps Elders with Singing & Dancing

Art is more than a culture and a manifestation of expression, for Tidewater Arts Outreach, it’s a beacon of hope for the elderly with dementia. Last month, TAO held workshops for caregivers and the elderly to demonstrate how music, movement and singing can improve mood, core strength, emotional wellness – and the sessions were inspiring to say the least.

Licensed Physical Therapist/Dancer, Michele Martin Nielsen gives presentation to caregivers on best practices for developing and delivering live high-quality performing arts programming.

After the workshop, caregivers joined their patients in some fun singing and dancing activities. It was fun to see how a simple song could instantly change the mood of an elder person. Before we knew it, feet were tapping and hands were clapping along.

MaryAnn Toboz, Founder and Executive Director of Tidewater Arts Outreach talked about the organization’s core service components, which are training, advocacy and outreach and the impact the arts has on dementia and its need in healthcare.

Music & Movement teaches communication strategies for working with individuals who have dementia, ways to inspire participation in movement activities, functional techniques for adapting to a range of abilities and methods to increase potential of music and movement for elder participants.

TowneBank Mortgage Makeover

The Jpixx crew had a great day capturing lifestyle images for TowneBank Mortgage , but not without some hilarious madness. With crazy parking situations, clogged sinks, and reflector-folding issues — the day was also full of beautiful locations, entertaining talent, wonderful weather and some really fun shots.

The asset library of photos and reflect TowneBank Mortgage’s solutions with the family in mind. So, we had couples, families and groups of swanky adults enjoying not only the scenery, but the homes, which are currently on the market.

Jpixx’s very own, Jessa and her daughter Kenzie were featured in the shoot as well.

Hampton Roads Students Reached Higher for College Signing Day

College Signing Day was a major success for college bound students in the Hampton Roads area. More than 1,500 soon-to-be college freshmen packed the Ted Constant Convocation Center last week to celebrate their commitment to Reach Higher. First Lady, Michele Obama, started the Reach Higher initiative to inspire students to complete their education past high school through a professional training program, community college, or four-year college or university.

College Signing Day

Jpixx, in partnership with the ACCESS College Foundation and Rubin Communications, was in the mix capturing all of the excitement via Facebook Live. Shaggy, radio host and music director for Z104, hosted the event while several key speakers provided words of wisdom to the students including:

  • Bonnie Sutton, CEO and President of the ACCESS College Foundation
  • Dr. Ellen Neufeldt, Old Dominion University Vice President for Student and  Enrollment Services
  • Gilbert Bland, Council Member, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia
  • Bruce Bradley, Chairman of the ACCESS College Foundation Board of Directors

An unforgettable moment was Shaggy getting the crowd on its feet for an impromptu throwback to the Swag Surf, a dance popularized in 2009. Once the beat dropped, the Ted Constant Convocation Center lit up!

From Suffolk to Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Public Schools, students from all over the Hampton Roads school district were especially eager to represent their future alma maters. Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason University and Morehouse College are just a few of the schools students from across the Tidewater region will be entering in the fall.

Jpixx sends well wishes to the all of the students as they embark on their new journey!

Jpixx Springing up all over Hampton Roads

So far, 2016 has kept the entire Jpixx outfit on their toes. From the Portsmouth Public Schools Google Chromebook Launch to the TAO Sea Level Festival earlier this month, Jpixx has worked on some amazing projects with some incredible people. But don’t worry if you missed the latest — all highlights are right here, just for you.

Portsmouth Public Schools partners with Jpixx for Google Chromebook Launch

Jpixx was on location to capture the reactions of over 4,000 high schoolers the day they were gifted brand new Google Chromebooks throughout the city of Portsmouth. In conjunction with Virginia’s e-Learning Backpack Initiative and Google For Education the laptops have opened a world of opportunity for the students  to expand their education beyond the classroom.

Jpixx nabs 2016 Beacon Award at Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival

The annual TAO Sea Level Singer/Songwriter Festival showcased some serious talent this year and proved yet again that Norfolk’s locals know how to really bring the house down. Spearheading the festival’s digital marketing efforts was the Jpixx crew, who made a special appearance on stage to receive the 2016 Beacon Award for contributions made to TAO throughout the years. Needless to say, there were a lot of high fives that day.

Check out all the Emerging Artist performances on the Jpixx YouTube channel.

*A big congratulations to Andy Geels, the festival’s Emerging Artist Contest winner and also to Katie Howard, who was voted the audience favorite in the Jpixx online poll. As the winner of the Emerging Artist Contest Audience Poll, Howard will be receiving a free HD music video experience from Jpixx – stay tuned!

“The Tide” to make waves at NOVA Film Festival
While we’re talking music…

The city of Norfolk will be making a splash at this year’s Northern Virginia Film and Music Festival, taking place this week April 21st – 30th in the DC Metro area. Jpixx’ awarded-winning music video “The Tide” — written by Norfolk native, singer/songwriter Skye Zentz as an ode to her beloved hometown — is set to screen Monday, April 25th at the Angelika Film Center in Fairfax, Virginia.

Jpixx Takes over Downtown Norfolk
Even if you haven’t seen any of our work on TV or spotted our latest projects online, you might’ve been lucky enough to have caught Jpixx in action. From the unveiling of the new Lights over Granby during First Fridays in April, helping celebrate the renovated Spirit of Norfolk at the unveiling last week to promoting the Nauticus National Maritime Center or filming with mayoral candidate “Kenny” Alexander, Jpixx has been hustling to capture Norfolk at its best.

Kenny Alexander Teams with Jpixx for Norfolk Campaign Spots

Jpixx recently partnered with Dave Iwans & Associates (DIA) and Norfolk mayoral candidate, former Virginia Senator Kenneth Cooper Alexander, to produce TV and radio ads and build momentum for his campaign.

While exploring downtown Norfolk with “Kenny,” the Jpixx team hit up notable hot spots throughout the city including Slover Library, City Hall and the Senator’s own alma mater, Old Dominion University.

“Jpixx really helped capture Kenny — the businessman, the community leader, his personal background — and they really brought his story to life,” stated DIA PR Manager Dan Cawley.

Kenny’s humility and high spirits resonated with everyone on set, and his dedicated staff was on hand to help fulfill the vision set forth for his hometown.

Kenny Alexander

One person, in particular, was dedicated to making sure that Kenny looked the part on camera.

“My absolute favorite part of this shoot was a tailor running up to the Slover Library with a garment bag full of suit jackets so he could change wardrobe on the fly,” states Jpixx Production Assistant April Campion. “It just shows how committed the citizens are to seeing Kenny succeed!”

The Norfolk mayoral election takes place next month on Tuesday, May 3rd. Get to know Kenny and learn more about his plans for the city of Norfolk on KennethAlexander.com.
