“Alcoholic” Royksopp Music Vid premiers at BFI

Being a puppet to alcoholism is no laughing matter… or is it?

A finalist on the Genero.tv website – “The Alcoholic” is a video set to the tune of a Royksopp song with the same name. Here we follow a man who finds himself a puppet to alcoholism. Intended to have the look of a comedy and the feel of a tragedy – this video juxtaposes the two with a combination of puppetry and live action. Think “Avenue Q” meets “Requiem for A Dream”

Although the film was selected as a Runner Up to the overall competition on Genero.TV – it was honorarily selected to premier at a special BUG event during London’s BFI (British Film Institute) screening. A special writeup can be found here.

Jpixx WINS 48HFP! Official Press Release

HAMPTON ROADS FILM WINS INTERNATIONAL FILM CONTEST

“In Captivity” by JPIXX films from Hampton Roads wins the
International Best Film Prize at the 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza
TAOS, NEW MEXICO (March 4, 2012) Over 3,500 teams from 100 cities around the world created films in 48 hours for the world’s largest timed film competition. The winning film, “In Captivity”, produced by Hampton Roads filmmakers Jon Abrahams and Jim McCullough took home the International Grand Prize trophy.
The winners were announced on March 8 at a screening and awards ceremony held at the 48 Hour Film Project’s Filmapalooza in connection with the Taos Shorz Film Festival in Taos, New Mexico. Winning filmmakers from as far as Mongolia and Melborne were in attendance.
In cities around the world film teams created their films in just 48 hours. On a Friday night they were assigned a character, prop and line of dialogue to include in the film. They then drew a genre from a hat. The completed films had to be turned in by 7:30 on the dot on Sunday night. Late films were disqualified. The films screened later that week to packed crowds at local theaters.
The winners will receive $3000 cash, a trophy, and their film will screen at the Cannes Film Festival in the Short Film Corner.
The judges for the 2011 48 Hour Film Project were:
• KIMBERLY BROWNING, the founder of the Hollywood Shorts Film Festival

ECSC Recap Video (pre-Irene)

We got a lot of HOT footage from last year’s East Coast Surfing Championship – and we were poised to do the same in 2011, but hurricane Irene put a damper on the 49th annual event, leaving us with a rag tag crew to cover what was left of the competition.

Sometimes while shooting photos – I sneak a bit ‘o video in the mix – and I was able to do just that at my friend Fareine’s beautiful hillside wedding in Charlottesville, VA.This song’s been stuck in my head for about a year, and I didn’t really have enough romantic video to go lovey dovey with the edit – so this is what happened. “Passion Fruit” wins the HR 48Hr Film Project

This is the winning submission to the 2010 48-Hour Film Project – Hampton Roads. The time period happened to start while we were concluding our vaca in the Far East, so I was able to grab a few shots as we passed through a Taiwanese market to the airport. Then, some guerilla shots at the Tokyo, Detroit and Norfolk airports – as well as a few shots on the planes.
Unfortunately, Teviya came down with stomach flu a few days before, so I was forced to act in my own film (boooooo).

Here are a few more interesting facts about the film:
* The Chinese man at the market is Jon’s uncle, who contrary to popular belief does not work at a fruit market.

* The fruit Jon ate is actually a native Taiwanese fruit. It tastes like a cross between an apple and a pear (not very sweet). It was probably the riskiest thing he ate, since it was in a market near to raw fish and meat. Fortunately, the stand owner washed the top fruit on the pile.

*Jon and Teviya traveled a total of 25 hours — some of the shooting and all script writing occured during this time. They did manage to sneak a few shots in the airplane (Including the end credits sequence is a video of the ocean as they passed over the Pacific). They didn’t get back to Virginia until Saturday night, so Jon pulled an all-nighter filming the last few scenes at 3am, then rerecording sound and editing until the deadline.

*Teviya was so ill with stomach flu after the trip back, she received two IVs from the doctor and was told not to go to work for a full week.

* The film’s opening score, “To the Sea” was originally recorded by Jon and Teviya.

* This is the fourth year the couple has entered the competition, and is the smallest cast/crew they’ve worked with. You can see past entries on this youtube page.

*During the 48 Hour period – Jon met with prospective wedding photo clients for a consultation – AND BOOKED them!

The challenge of the 48-Hour Film Project is simple: Filmmakers write, shoot, edit and export a film in 48 hours. In addition, each team has to incorporate a few required elements along and pick a random genre out of a hat at the beginning of the 48 hour period
Other 48 Hour Awards Include:
Best Graphics
Best Cinematography
Best Editing

Genre: Horror
Prop: Cheese
Character: Tim Thackery – Mechanic
Line: “I’ve Looked and I Can’t Find It”

Hope you enjoy!
