Hampton Roads Students Reached Higher for College Signing Day

College Signing Day was a major success for college bound students in the Hampton Roads area. More than 1,500 soon-to-be college freshmen packed the Ted Constant Convocation Center last week to celebrate their commitment to Reach Higher. First Lady, Michele Obama, started the Reach Higher initiative to inspire students to complete their education past high school through a professional training program, community college, or four-year college or university.

Jpixx, in partnership with the ACCESS College Foundation and Rubin Communications, was in the mix capturing all of the excitement via Facebook Live. Shaggy, radio host and music director for Z104, hosted the event while several key speakers provided words of wisdom to the students including:

  • Bonnie Sutton, CEO and President of the ACCESS College Foundation
  • Dr. Ellen Neufeldt, Old Dominion University Vice President for Student and  Enrollment Services
  • Gilbert Bland, Council Member, State Council of Higher Education for Virginia
  • Bruce Bradley, Chairman of the ACCESS College Foundation Board of Directors

An unforgettable moment was Shaggy getting the crowd on its feet for an impromptu throwback to the Swag Surf, a dance popularized in 2009. Once the beat dropped, the Ted Constant Convocation Center lit up!

From Suffolk to Virginia Beach and Chesapeake Public Schools, students from all over the Hampton Roads school district were especially eager to represent their future alma maters. Virginia Commonwealth University, George Mason University and Morehouse College are just a few of the schools students from across the Tidewater region will be entering in the fall.
