A Brand New Look For Every Book – Grand Opening at Slover Library

Books have the power to challenge the minds of every individual, whether young or old. Who wasn’t inspired when Dr. Seuss told them “Kid, you’ll move mountains!” And didn’t Sam I Am get us to try new things before making blind assumptions?

The impetus behind a great read to see more,  reach higher and push the boundaries of imagination is compounded and multiplied in every local library. Now, with the Grand Opening of the Slover Library, the city of Norfolk is welcome to unleash the potential hidden among the pages.

We partnered with the library to create this video invitation for you and your family to come out and visit this weekend for all the fun festivities.

The new library will open at 10 a.m. on January 9 with the First Book Checkout ceremony performed by Mayor Paul D. Fraim. Celebrations will continue all weekend through January 11 with Dr. Seuss-inspired activities, games, and entertainment. Rumor has it the Cat in the Hat will even be in attendance.

See you there! And remember, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”

The One with the Creepy Cat Lady – ESI video series

“Oh those folks at Jpixx, they’re so crazy.” Recently we asked ourselves how crazy we really can be when given free reign to do anything with our scripts. Anything.

The results came out nicely in a six-video package that we produced for Electronic Systems, Inc. (ESI). We not only told you who ESI wasn’t but who ESI strives to be each day with its top-notch customer service and information savvy technicians. But don’t let us do all the talking, see for yourself:

Jessa said watching Amie bring her “cat lady” persona to life was the funniest part of the shoot.

“I absolutely could not stop laughing. Every time she turned her chair around and I saw the lipstick on the teeth, I lost it.”

Riding in Chairs with Girls

The shoot also involved animated running down the halls, smacking straight into walls, and intense facial distortion to bring each character to life. One of our own Jcrew members even got a few cameos in the series. Check out Chandler at 0:23!

A big thanks to all the ESI employees that let us take over their space and recreate the characters that could be in your very own office. For the complete series, visit ESI’s YouTube page and follow us on Facebook for new installments in the ESI saga.

Celebrating Mike Evans, “The Ultimate ‘Possibilist'”

This December, the folks at Hanbury Evans Wright Vlattas + Company (HEWV) took a moment to celebrate the career of beloved founder Mike Evans. A narrative tribute was the highlight of the celebration, featuring several of the company’s employees and clients nation-wide.

Deborah Marquardt, Hanbury Evans public relations director, said Evans continues to be the quintessential leader. “I’ve come to believe the impossible things because Mike is the ultimate ‘possibilist,’” she said.

The Jpixx video crew visited the Hanbury Evans office to help capture employees’ favorite moments with Evans that inspire the rest of his team to believe in themselves and put forth their best effort. Of course we couldn’t have done it without the help of our assistant Jerry, a handy cellophane prop who contentedly watched with a bagel by his side.

Behind the Scenes of “Nearsighted” Project Greenlight Shoot

We’re wrapping up with Project Greenlight and hope you’ll consider becoming a judge so you can vote on the best videos (AKA our “Nearsighted”)!

Our full day of shooting began with most of the cast meeting at Jpixx headquarters for the “Nearsighted” Project Greenlight shoot at 9am on August 2nd.  Props and equipment were gathered by our crew, while hair, make-up, and wardrobe transformed our wonderful cast.

We headed over to Central 111 and, in no time, armed with fake mixed drinks, go-go dancers, a drag queen, and extra club-goers, filming began.  The club was bumping by noon!  We partied until the club opened at 4pm.  Check out the amazing and gorgeous cast/crew below!

Our hard-working intern, Chandler, caught some Zzzz’s while we waited for night to fall.

The evening was met with a lot of rain and patience.  After filming the front entrance scene, the entire cast and crew headed through a packed and provocatively dressed crowd, to the back entrance of the club.  (no we didn’t get pictures of that). Somewhere around midnight, we all huddled under umbrellas and our hatchback lids to eat Brothers Pizza, which for some reason was the best tasting pizza we had ever eaten.

We have to give a huge THANK YOU to our umbrella holders and all who persevered through the entire shoot until the final crew shot was taken at 2:15am!  Side note – Jon got to be the FIRST person young Morgan Bruce drove with outside of her family (learning permit). Woohooo!!!

You guys all rock! Thanks for coming together to put together this wonderful film!

International Day of Happiness

HappyDay

Jpixx is joining Pharrell Williams (who was born in VaBeach) and others around the world to celebrate International Day of Happiness March 20th.  We’ve created a #HAPPYDAY video of Pharrell Williams’ song, “Happy” complete with dancing and lots of smiles.  Even though it rained and soaked everyone’s socks, we had a blast!  The sun came out for a few minutes, and with it, a rainbow.  Thanks to all those who took part in our video!  Have a Happy Day from Jpixx!

Jpixx submits newest short film to Genero.TV

More than a year and a half after Jpixx’s successful Genero.tv debut with “The Puppet Alcoholic” – they’re at it again with their newest submission for Patrick Watson’s “Blackwind”. At the time of the competition deadline, there were 70 entries, making it one of the most popular songs on the site. The winner of the competition (selected by the artist himself) will become the official music video.

In this short film, Nova (who just turned 18 months old today) stars alongside his pal Helena in a romantic tale that showcases the magic of love and the importance of holding on to that magic.

D*Nik “Day & Night” Music Video premieres

Amidst a packed house at the Palace on Plume, Jpixx’s newest music video for D*Nik’s “Day & Night” premiered to a live performance by the band. Immediately following, D*Nik kept the buzz going with encore performances of other singles off their debut album “Rockz & Slingshotz.”

Last year D*Nik frontrunners Duane and Nakia (also married btw) approached Jpixx with an offer to collaborate on their first music video. After months of concepting and preparation, the shoot unfolded over the course of two days at TurboWash Laundromat in Norfolk, the Mansion in Portsmouth, and in downtown Newport News.

Since the release of the video, D*Nik has gotten some nice press, notably from Afropunk, which you can check out here:

Check out the actual music video below or check out some of the production shots from the shoot.

Jpixx/In Captivity receives full feature spread in “The Beacon”

Today’s edition of the “Virginia Pilot’s Beacon” featured a full-page color article on Jpixx founders Jon and Teviya Abrahams. The article, which can be found here, goes into the creative process of their award winning film “In Captivity” and introduces further insight on future developments. VIRGINIA BEACH

Teviya and Jon Abrahams love to tell stories.

Their latest story, “In Captivity,” is a six-minute film that was named the winner of the 48-Hour Film Project.

The competition this year had more than 3,500 teams from 100 cities around the world submit films.

Participants are given a character (Tim or Tammie), a prop (playing cards), a line of dialogue (“There’s not enough time”) and a genre (superhero).

Then they have 48 hours to write, shoot, edit and score their film. Jon’s high school friend from Kansas City, Jim McCullough, joined with them on the project as one of the writers and special effects specialists.

Scenes shot across Hampton Roads – including the beach, Mount Trashmore and a parking garage in Norfolk – are seen throughout the film.

“It was a huge collaborative effort,” Jon said about the brainstorming, writing, acting and more.

“The 48 hours is like a double-edged sword because it forces you to get things done and make decisions, but it also forces you to make decisions as quickly as you can,” said Jon.

“In Captivity” was selected as the International Grand Prize winner at the Filmapalooza in New Mexico in March.

“I think one of the reasons we won was because it’s a very touching film and it really grabs you,” Teviya said. The film has a plot twist near the conclusion that deals with autism.

The film won Best Film, Honorable Mention for Directing, Best Editing and Best Special Effects.

At the end of May several members of the team – including McCullough, and Jon and Teviya Abrahams – traveled to the Cannes Film Festival.

Dressed in black tie and gown, the couple briefly walked the red carpet, attended screenings, met filmmakers from around the world, stayed in a villa in a nearby town, and soaked in the celebration.

“It’s an amazing feeling of validity that something I’m passionate about is recognized by people in the industry,” Jon said.

The couple met while both were attending the University of Missouri.

“We’ve always been a great team,” said Teviya, noting Jon plays the piano while she sings.

Teviya, 32, studied art education and Jon, 31, majored in photojournalism. They graduated in 2002 and it’s been a whirlwind of delving into the field, entering competitions and becoming parents to their son, Nova, who is now 14 months old. Jon works on video and photography with Jpixx Films.

This is not the first time they have entered the 48-Hour Film Project. They won for their film, “Passion Fruit,” in 2010.

Jon is busy working on his next big idea and said a feature film is in his future. They also plan to enter the Sundance Film Festival.

“We are on some kind of wave, a momentum,” Teviya said.

“What does this mean for our future, if this is something we can do in 48 hours?” Jon said.

“Alcoholic” Royksopp Music Vid premiers at BFI

Being a puppet to alcoholism is no laughing matter… or is it?

A finalist on the Genero.tv website – “The Alcoholic” is a video set to the tune of a Royksopp song with the same name. Here we follow a man who finds himself a puppet to alcoholism. Intended to have the look of a comedy and the feel of a tragedy – this video juxtaposes the two with a combination of puppetry and live action. Think “Avenue Q” meets “Requiem for A Dream”

Although the film was selected as a Runner Up to the overall competition on Genero.TV – it was honorarily selected to premier at a special BUG event during London’s BFI (British Film Institute) screening. A special writeup can be found here.

Leo Lee is in “The Pursuit of Happiness”

The Lee family got together in Orlando for the holiday season to celebrate the most highly anticipated family reunion EVER! Traveling from Switzerland, Ecuador, China and Canada.. not to mention Virginia, Louisiana, DC, Houston and Kansas City – we had to make a video to commemorate the event. What better person to lead us than our very own gangsta cousin, Leo Lee. Unfortunately, we only actually filmed a few minutes of dedicated footage for this video…. so there’s a lot of random clips in there… but Leo hams it up pretty good… AND the song is pretty awesome. Thanks KiD CuDi

2009 ADDY HR Promo Video

I took on the Creative Chair role leading up to the 2009 ADDYs, and it was a whirlwind of an experience. We produced a ton of video promotional content, and this kind video kind of recaps it all. Basically, the premis is this. An Ad Epidemic has swept the land. A virus was systematically removing the creativity from the world, adversely affecting the advertising industry. It was crazy complicated and high-concept, but we had a fun time splicing the edited footage with live actors from the show.
