From Virginia Beach to SXSW: Jpixx Documents the Making of The Pirate King

This week at SXSW, the indie film The Pirate King will make its world premiere — and for the Jpixx team, it’s a moment that feels especially close to home.

While Jpixx didn’t direct or shoot the feature itself, we were brought in to capture something just as important: the story behind the story. Over several days of production, Jpixx filmed Electronic Press Kit (EPK) interviews and b-roll designed to help introduce the film to audiences, festivals, and media outlets around the world. Our goal was simple — make the production look as incredible as it felt on set.

The film, written and directed by first-time director Josh Plasse and starring Rob Riggle and Jordana Brewster, was shot largely in Yorktown, Norfolk and Virginia Beach, putting our coastal region firmly on the cinematic map. The production spanned more than 20 days, but Jpixx was brought in by production supervisor and longtime collaborator April Campion to document key moments across five intense days of filming.

And intense they were.

Argghhhh… the hottest week of the year in Yorktown, VA

Owner Jon Abrahams was on set every day, often working through blistering near-100-degree temperatures while capturing interviews and behind-the-scenes footage with the film’s cast and crew. Some days meant filming alongside massive pirate ship set pieces. Others meant dramatic nighttime setups with the lead actors. And on the final day, as the production wrapped — we documented the final moments of a project that had taken months to bring to life.

The level of trust on set made this project especially rewarding. The production gave us significant autonomy to schedule interviews and collaborate directly with the film’s main players — including the real-life inspiration behind the film, local legend Todd Willis, known as “The Pirate King” himself.

Before filming even began, we photographed stills of several actors that were later used as props within the film — a small but fun way our work became woven directly into the production.

Jon and SXSW go waaaaaay back!

For Jon Abrahams, the experience carries an extra layer of meaning. He’s worked SXSW several times as official festival coverage crew and has attended the festival before as a filmmaker. But this marks the first time a project he worked on will premiere at the festival — a full-circle moment that makes this SXSW especially exciting.

Projects like this aren’t typical Jpixx assignments. But being embedded inside a large-scale film set — collaborating with talented cast and crew while helping shape how the film will be presented to the world — made The Pirate King a uniquely fulfilling experience.

As the film premieres at SXSW this week, we’re incredibly proud to have played a small role in helping capture the energy, ambition, and hard work that went into bringing this story to life.

And yes — sometimes that meant filming pirates in 100-degree heat.

Totally worth it.

Travel Vlog: Out West with Corazón Latino & the Forest Service

One of the best parts of the work we do at Jpixx is that sometimes it takes us to some pretty incredible places.

For this latest adventure, Jackson and Trey headed out to Arizona with our longtime partners at Corazón Latino and the U.S. Forest Service. Working alongside Stacy, Felipe, and their team is always a highlight for us. They’re doing meaningful work connecting communities to public lands and protecting the places we all care about—and we’re grateful to help tell those stories.

This trip is part of a growing series of travel vlogs we’ve been sharing from the field. It’s a bit of a behind-the-scenes look at the places we go, the people we film, and the moments that happen in between the official shoots.

One thing we’ve learned over the years is that you don’t need a massive film crew to create cinematic work. Our approach is to stay small, nimble, and collaborative, which lets us move quickly, travel light, and capture authentic moments as they happen—while still delivering the kind of high-end results our national clients expect.

And honestly, projects like this are just fun. We get to spend time in beautiful places, meet people doing inspiring work, and collaborate with partners we’ve worked with for years. That kind of trust and shared mission always makes the work better.

The final edit from this trip is shaping up to be one of our strongest pieces yet. In the meantime, here’s a look at the adventure.

Embarking on New Challenges | 48-hour Film Project

Jpixx is filled to the brim with creativity. We are lucky to have such talented filmmakers right inside our office, ready for their next challenge! So when the 48-hour season rolled around, we were geared up to go. This year we had Savannah, Trey, Jon and Teviya all went on their separate missions. Check it out!

Savannah

“I always make an effort to learn something new on every 48-Hour Film Project that I do, and this one was no different. What better time to learn something than when you’re under pressure and running on a combined total of 5 hours of sleep? I always run sound and do the sound design with my friends on the team, Shadowcast Films, and this 48 I really enjoyed learning from Christopher Wratten that you can build suspense with music by using it as your hits and action drops. There were so many elements of sound that made our film, “Don’t Believe the Hype” something special, and it really is the beautiful creation of five different minds writing in a room on Saturday morning at 3 am.”

Trey

“This year’s 48-Hour Film Project gave me the opportunity to work with a lot of people I have never worked with before and make friends with filmmakers from other scenes. We had a pretty stacked crew and lots of options for actors. In this case, having a large crew with many different roles really helped. Everyone took their job seriously while always having fun.”

Jon and Teviya

“First off, I just absolutely love the filmmaking spirit seen by Savannah, Trey, and Teviya. Really drives me to want to get out of the box and keep having fun with video – which is the main reason we got into it in the first place.

This year’s 48hfp was all about bringing it down small. With our own kids as lead actors, and a tiny crew of Teviya, Jessa, and myself – my goal was to come away with a fun meaningful piece featuring my lil budding superstars (yes, I am biased) but also show that good storytelling can be accomplished without a super large crew.”  -Jon

We are so excited to see all three of these films premiere at The Naro Expanded Cinema. Come and see for yourself!
